What is a gadget?
A gadget is a little item, such as a machine, that serves a specific purpose yet is generally considered a curiosity. Gizmos are a term used to describe gadgets.
"Gadget" is a term used in the software industry to describe computer applications that deliver services without requiring the launch of a separate application for each one, instead running in an environment that handles many gadgets.
Several implementations, such as JavaScript, form input, and other picture formats, are based on current software development methodologies.
The word gadget was first used in the context of software engineering by the creators of AmigaOS, the operating system for Amiga computers, in 1985. (intuition.library and also later gadtools.library).
It refers to a control element in a graphical user interface, which is known as a GUI widget in other technical traditions. Since then, this name standard has been in use (as of 2008).
It's unclear whether other software businesses use the term in their technology names as a direct reference to that inspiration or merely allude to the generic meaning. In this usage, the term widget is older.
